What were American Cocker Spaniels originally bred for?
American Cocker Spaniels were originally bred as gun dogs to hunt game birds, especially woodcocks. Their excellent sense of smell and compact size helped them flush birds from dense brush and retrieve them for hunters.
In fact, the name “Cocker” comes from their skill in hunting woodcocks. Although the breed originated from English Spaniels, breeders in the United States developed a smaller dog with a more luxurious coat.
Over time, American Cocker Spaniels became less common as hunting dogs and grew in popularity as beloved family companions and successful show dogs.

Common health problems
American Cocker Spaniels are generally healthy dogs and often enjoy long lifespans when properly cared for.
Responsible breeders screen their dogs for health conditions affecting the hips, kneecaps (patellas), and eyes, and can usually provide health testing records for the puppy’s parents.
Regular ear cleaning, especially after baths, is important because the breed is prone to ear infections.
