What were American English Coonhounds originally bred for?

The American English Coonhound was originally bred by early American frontiersmen as a versatile hunting dog. These dogs were valued for their excellent sense of smell, speed and stamina, which helped them track and trail prey across rough, dense terrain.

They were especially used to hunt raccoons at night, chasing them into trees and barking loudly to alert hunters to their location. During the day, they could also be used to hunt foxes.

Over time, these hounds were bred with local dogs to create a hardy hunting companion that could cope with the challenging American landscape and excel at both tracking and treeing game.

Common health problems

Responsible breeders screen their dogs for health conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts. Regular ear checks are also important for removing excess earwax and debris and helping prevent problems.
