What were Siberian Huskies originally bred for?

Originally bred by the Chukchi people of northeastern Asia, Siberian Huskies were developed as endurance sledge dogs built to handle long journeys across frozen landscapes.

These hardworking dogs could pull light loads over great distances at steady speeds, even in harsh winter conditions. Huskies were also valued family companions that lived closely with the community.

Over more than 3,000 years, the breed developed the strength, stamina, intelligence, and high energy levels that define it today.

Common health problems

Siberian Huskies are generally healthy dogs with a relatively long lifespan, and many remain active well into their senior years.

Although some health issues, such as cancer, arthritis, hip dysplasia, and certain eye or neurological conditions, can occur, most Huskies are healthy and energetic.

Originally bred to pull light loads over long distances in freezing temperatures while eating very little food, Huskies are known for maintaining a healthy weight on less food than many other breeds of similar size.

Keeping a Husky at a healthy weight can help them live a longer, healthier life. They are also naturally very clean dogs and known for having little to no doggy odour.
