What were Bluetick Coonhounds originally bred for?
Bluetick Coonhounds were originally bred in the United States to track and hunt nocturnal game, particularly raccoons.
They were valued for their excellent sense of smell and ability to follow old, faint scents across rugged terrain. Once they located their quarry, they would chase it up a tree and use their distinctive, loud bark to alert hunters.
Their stamina, determination and ability to work in challenging weather made them well suited to long hunting trips. Bluetick Coonhounds were also used to track larger game, including cougars, bears, lynx and wild boar.
