What were Boerboels originally bred for?

Boerboels, often called South African Mastiffs, were originally bred by Dutch, German, and French settlers in South Africa as strong, all-purpose farm dogs.

Their main job was to guard homes and farms, protect livestock from dangerous predators like lions, leopards, and hyenas, and even help track game. Because they worked in tough conditions, breeders developed Boerboels to be powerful, fearless, and highly protective, making them excellent farm guardians.

Common health problems

The Boerboel is generally a healthy breed, but responsible breeders will test their dogs for common health conditions, including hip and elbow dysplasia, heart disease, and eye problems such as ectropion and entropion, which affect the eyelids.

Regular care is also important to keep a Boerboel healthy. Their ears should be checked often for signs of infection, and their teeth should be brushed regularly to maintain good dental health.
