What were West Highland White Terriers originally bred for?

West Highland White Terriers, often called Westies, were originally bred in Scotland to hunt and catch small burrowing animals such as rats, foxes, and badgers.

They were developed to be brave, tough, and small enough to follow prey into underground tunnels. Farmers also relied on Westies to control rat populations around grain stores and livestock.

Breeders intentionally developed the breed’s distinctive white coat so hunters could easily spot their dogs in the field and avoid confusing them with their prey.

Common health problems

West Highland White Terriers are generally healthy dogs, but like all breeds, they can be prone to certain health conditions, including heart disease and patellar luxation (a knee joint problem). Responsible breeders screen their dogs for these issues to help produce healthy puppies.
