What were Schipperkes originally bred for?

The Schipperke was originally bred in Belgium as a versatile working dog, particularly on canal barges and farms.

These small, fearless dogs were valued for their ability to guard boats, property and valuable cargo, while also keeping rats and other vermin under control. They worked as alert watchdogs, skilled rat hunters and loyal companions for farmers and tradesmen.

The breed developed from an old, small black Belgian sheepdog known as the Leauvenaar, rather than from Spitz-type breeds.

Common health problems

Schipperkes are generally healthy dogs, but like all breeds, they can be prone to certain health conditions.

Responsible breeders screen their breeding dogs for issues such as luxating patellas (slipping kneecaps), Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, eye problems and thyroid disorders. Breeders can also test for MPS IIIB, a rare and fatal inherited disease that typically appears between two and four years of age and can cause problems with balance and coordination.
