What were Pyrenean Mountain Dogs originally bred for?
Pyrenean Mountain Dogs, also known as Great Pyrenees, were originally bred to guard livestock in the rugged mountains between France and Spain.
For thousands of years, these powerful dogs lived alongside flocks of sheep, protecting them from predators such as wolves and bears. Unlike herding breeds that move sheep from place to place, Pyrenean Mountain Dogs stayed with the flock as watchful guardians.
Their thick white coats helped them blend in with the sheep, making it easier to surprise predators that approached at night. Because they often worked far from their shepherds, they developed an independent nature and the confidence to make important decisions on their own.

Common health problems
Pyrenean Mountain Dogs are generally healthy, and responsible breeders work hard to reduce the risk of inherited health problems.
Health testing is recommended for conditions that can affect the breed, including hip and elbow dysplasia, eye disorders, luxating patellas (slipping kneecaps), and certain neurological and immune-related diseases.
Like many large breeds, Pyrenean Mountain Dogs can also be affected by some types of cancer and by bloat, a serious and potentially life-threatening condition in which the stomach fills with gas and may twist.
