Neapolitan Mastiffs were originally bred in Southern Italy as powerful and versatile guard dogs. Their ancestors are believed to have descended from ancient Roman war dogs, and over time they became valued protectors of homes, farms and large estates.
They were also used to guard livestock, including cattle and goats, and to protect them from predators such as wolves and from thieves. Their size, strength and imposing appearance made them well suited to the job of protecting people, property and livestock.

Like other giant breeds, Neapolitan Mastiffs can be prone to certain health problems. Cherry eye, which causes red, swollen tissue to appear in the corner of the eye, is a relatively common minor condition and usually does not cause permanent damage.

Despite their loose skin and deep wrinkles, most Neapolitans do not suffer from significant skin problems. However, they can develop bloat, a sudden and potentially life-threatening condition that can affect deep-chested dogs. Hip dysplasia can also occur in the breed.
