What were English Springer Spaniels originally bred for?

English Springer Spaniels were originally bred as versatile hunting companions whose main job was to flush game birds from thick undergrowth into the open. Their name comes from their ability to “spring” game from cover.

They were also developed to retrieve birds on land and from water, with their athletic build, deep chest, and webbed paws helping them work tirelessly in difficult terrain.

Interestingly, English Springer Spaniels and Cocker Spaniels were once born in the same litters. The smaller puppies were used to hunt woodcock, while the larger dogs were chosen to flush larger game birds.

Common health problems
