What were Dobermanns originally bred for?

Dobermanns were originally bred in Germany in the late 1800s to be strong protectors with sharp intelligence, quick reactions, and the speed and stamina needed to chase down or scare off threats.

Their bravery and trainability soon made them popular not only as personal protection dogs, but also in police, military, and search-and-rescue work.

Today, Dobermanns are still known as excellent watchdogs, but they are also loving, loyal, and affectionate family companions.

Common health problems

Dobermanns are generally healthy dogs, but like all breeds, they can be prone to certain health conditions. One serious condition is bloat, a life-threatening stomach problem that owners should learn to recognise quickly.

Other health issues that can affect the breed include hip dysplasia, heart disease, von Willebrand’s disease (bleeding disorder), progressive retinal atrophy (eye disease), albinism, and hypothyroidism.

Responsible breeders screen their dogs for these conditions through health testing to help produce healthier puppies.
