What were Dachshunds originally bred for?

Dachshunds were originally bred in Germany to hunt badgers and other animals that lived in burrows. Their name actually means “badger dog,” coming from the German words dachs (badger) and hund (dog).

Breeders developed these brave little dogs to use their strong sense of smell to track, chase, and flush animals out of underground tunnels. They later bred the Miniature Dachshund to hunt small animals such as rabbits.

Common health problems

Dachshunds are generally healthy dogs and can live between 12 and 16 years with proper care.

A healthy diet and regular exercise are important to help them stay fit and maintain strong muscles. Because of their long backs, it’s especially important to prevent them from becoming overweight and to avoid activities that could cause back injuries.

Like many dogs with floppy ears, Dachshunds can also be prone to ear infections, so their ears should be cleaned regularly to keep them healthy.
