What were Afghan Hounds originally bred for?
Nomadic tribes in the mountainous regions of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India originally bred Afghan Hounds to hunt game by sight rather than scent.
These elegant sighthounds relied on their remarkable speed, agility, and keen eyesight to track and catch animals such as hares, foxes, gazelles, and antelopes across vast, rugged landscapes. Their long, silky coat served an important purpose, protecting them from the cold, harsh weather of high-altitude mountain environments.
Because Afghan Hounds often hunted far from their owners, breeders developed them to think independently and make their own decisions while chasing prey.

Common health problems
Afghan Hounds are generally healthy dogs, but there are a few health considerations owners should be aware of.
Like other sighthounds, they have very little body fat, which can make them more sensitive to anaesthesia. For this reason, it is best to work with a veterinarian who is experienced with sighthound breeds if surgery is needed.
Afghan Hounds are also deep-chested dogs, which puts them at risk for bloat, a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that causes the stomach to fill with gas and sometimes twist.
