What were Rhodesian Ridgebacks originally bred for?
The Rhodesian Ridgeback was originally bred in Southern Africa in the late 1800s to help hunters track large game, including lions.
Often called the “Lion Dog,” these brave and athletic dogs worked in small groups of two or three to track lions and keep them at bay until the hunter arrived. They were never meant to attack or kill the lion, but rather to distract and control it with speed and agility.
The unique ridge of hair along their backs, which grows in the opposite direction from the rest of the coat, makes Rhodesian Ridgebacks easy to recognise.
While they were once prized for hunting and protection, today they are popular family dogs known for being loyal, affectionate, and sociable companions.

Common health problems
Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs are generally healthy, but responsible breeders test their dogs for common health issues such as hip and elbow dysplasia, thyroid problems, and certain eye conditions before breeding.
One condition sometimes seen in the breed is a dermoid sinus, a tube-like opening in the skin present from birth. Experienced breeders usually detect this condition in puppies through a careful physical examination.
Regular veterinary check-ups and responsible breeding practices help keep Rhodesian Ridgebacks healthy and thriving.
