What were Boxers originally bred for?

Boxers were originally bred in Germany in the late 19th century as strong and versatile working dogs.

They descended from the now-extinct Bullenbeisser, a mastiff-type breed used to hunt large game such as wild boar, bears, and deer. These dogs would chase, catch, and hold prey until hunters arrived.

As hunting practices changed, Boxers took on new roles, helping butchers control cattle, guarding homes and property, and later serving as police and military dogs.

Their courage, intelligence, and trainability made them valuable working companions, and they were used during both World Wars as guard dogs and messengers.

Common health problems

Boxers are loving family dogs that do best living indoors with their owners, as they do not tolerate extreme heat or cold very well.

While generally a healthy breed, they can be prone to certain health conditions, which is why responsible breeders screen their dogs for issues such as hip dysplasia, heart problems, thyroid conditions, degenerative myelopathy, and some cancers.

Regular vet check-ups, proper care, and a healthy lifestyle can help Boxers live happy and active lives.
