What were French Bulldogs originally bred for?
Originally bred in England, the French Bulldog became a popular lapdog among lace workers before they moved to France during the Industrial Revolution in search of better opportunities.
When the lace factories closed, many workers took their small dogs with them, and the breed quickly became popular in France, which is how the “French” Bulldog got its name.
Although Frenchies are now known for their adorable looks and affectionate personalities, they descend from the larger English Bulldog, a breed originally developed for the harsh sport of bull baiting. Because of this history, some French Bulldogs can still show strong-willed, stubborn, or territorial traits today.

Common health problems
French Bulldogs need extra care because of their flat faces and compact body shape. They are predisposed to over 20 genetic and structural health disorders, including breathing difficulties, skin and ear infections, joint problems, and spinal issues.

Their front-heavy build also makes swimming difficult, and they can struggle in the water. They should be supervised around pools, lakes, rivers, or any other bodies of water.
Frenchies often struggle in hot or humid weather and are more sensitive to anaesthesia than many other breeds. Responsible breeders help reduce these risks by health testing their breeding dogs.
