Hi, I’m Ilka!
I’m a full-time graphic designer in the pet care industry, which means I’m lucky enough to combine my career with my love for dogs.
But South Africa Dog Guide started long before Luca, my German Shorthaired Pointer, came into my life.
How it started
In 2022, I spent hours researching which dog would be right for me. I wanted an active dog and had plenty of adventures in mind.
But finding useful information wasn’t always easy.
Most websites focused on the basics, and much of the information was written for dog owners outside South Africa.
I wanted to know things like:
- What health problems should I look out for?
- What grooming does the breed need?
- What training options are available in South Africa?
- What do I actually need to know as a dog owner?
That’s when South Africa Dog Guide was born.
Meet Luca
Then came Luca, my first German Shorthaired Pointer. He’s my hiking buddy, my shadow and my favourite photography subject. Living with Luca has taught me that choosing a breed is only the beginning.
There is so much more to learn about understanding your dog, their needs, behaviour, training and everyday care.

I created South Africa Dog Guide to be the resource I wish I had when I was researching my next dog.
My goal is to make it easier for South African dog owners to find practical, easy-to-understand and locally relevant information about dogs and the breeds we love.
